Sales and Marketing, is there a distinction?

Is there a clear distinction between the sales and marketing functions of a company? To your customer, there is apparently none, and the transitions between the two appear seamless to them. I believe this to be true even in the Singapore context, and this may be an universal rule of thumb with all customers. This article here offers more insights.
